Ottawa Change puts a stop to School Lockdown
On the afternoon of Friday May 23rd, Assumption Elementary School put out a recorded phone message to parents that they would be holding a lockdown exercise on Monday the 26th sometime after 10:00am.
On Sunday May 25th, Ottawa Change members put up approximately 250 flyers around the Vanier area warning of a school lockdown exercise to be taking place at Assumption Elementary the next day. Lockdowns typically consist of forcible confinement of students in their classrooms. Police then simulate a threat with armed officers patrolling the halls and perimeter of the school. For any child, this experience could be very traumatic. Under the criminal code of Canada, these lockdowns qualify as an act of terrorism.
On Monday May 26th, word had spread of these terror excersises and media sources (A-Channel, CFRA) had picked up on the news and were reporting it. Ottawa Change was at the school that morning warning concerned parents of the drills that had been scheduled to take place. Some parents decided to keep their children at home for the day because of it.
Later, the school's principal came out to make a statement announcing the school would postpone it's lockdown exercise for another date. When asked why they had postponed the exercise, the principal refused to comment.
Afterwards, Ottawa Change member O'Neil spoke with A-Channel for an interview about the events that took place.

What a stupid thing to protest
Do you people not realize that these so-called "terror drills" are a useful tool nowadays? Your child needs to know what to do in an emergency situation. We already practice fire drills several times a year and the children are amazing at following procedure. They have learned by doing the drills what is expected of them should a situation ever arise. Wake up and read the newpapers and listen to the news (and no, TSN and Much Music News don't count). With terror threats all over the place, do you not want your child to be well prepared for any emergency where they spend 7 hours of each day? Get your heads out of the sand, you crazy bunch of lefties, and wake up to reality.
Its funny to hear "wake-up"
Its funny to hear "wake-up" and "read the newspapers and watch the news" in the same sentence
I hate thinking for myself...
If ANYONE is going to terrorize my children it will be me, not the school board, not the government of Ontario or Canada and not the police decked out in their matching SWAT pajamas and sub machine guns. I'm going to get the blame for screwing them up by the time they reach adulthood, so I get a say on decisions that we have effect on their social upbringing, deal?
What ever happened to having an assembly and inviting the friendly neighborhood policeman or fireman in to "talk" with children to ease their fears? Children are stupid but if we keep on this line they eventually will be good little robots. I mean well all know how sensible it was during the cold war to hide under your desk in case of a nuclear attack?
"Do your school work kids, and oh yes, be afraid, be very afraid."
The fact that some feel thats it's ok to submit our children to this level of intimidation and fear mongering is ludicrous.
This was poorly thought out and planned by the school board officials.
RE: What a stupid thing to protest
I agree with this poster completely, except mere drills don't go far enough. Terrorism is the greatest threat to our school children in Canada today. In fact, thousands of grieving parents a year could soon be burying their children because of grenade, mortar or rocket attacks at school.
So I propose all new and existing schools should be built exactly like military bases or maximum security prisons to keep our kids safe. I personally would like to see all schools have guard towers with snipers, huge walls topped with razor wire, mandatory body searches and tracking chips implanted in all students.
And any leftist punk parent who would not trade all privacy rights of their children for their safety is most certainly a strong potential recruit for Al-Qaeda!
Are You Afraid Yet?
Yes, anonymous, we were all sitting around one day watching TSN and Much Music and noticed that there was going to be a terror-drill in a Vanier school - then we performed our secret communist handskake and leapt into action. Seriously.
Anonymous, I suggest you read something other than the mainstream news because you really do not get the full picture. What are the chances that something is going to happen at your child's school that would warrant such a procedure?
Think big picture for a minute. Realize that fear is a political tool to render a population complacent, malliable, and obidient. There is ALWAYS some sort of threat that the government exploits to keep us unhinged and willing to go along with whatever the government wishes. Read your history, this has happened OVER AND OVER AGAIN.
So yes, you are correct, these 'terror-drills are a useful tool nowadays'. They are designed to get the population accustomed to a police-state environment. Once you realize the real purpose of these drills you will see just how quickly we are moving into the police-state where everyone is constanly monitored and surveilled.
On the surface, the drill at the Vanier school seems pretty beniegn (even a good idea); however, you need to look at the wider context to appreciate its true nature.
Terror Drills
With terror threats all over the place ? Please !
What are you refering to ? 9/11 ? 7/7 ? Toronto 18 ?
Use your energy to investigate these cases instead of spreading your message of hate and fear.
I would just like to say to ANON to wake up and stop living in this climate of fear !
An airplane can fall out of the sky onto the school, should we drill that next ?
Facts is kids don't need to think of school as a place where these events are a regular occurance !
